Getting around Guelph without a car

Share:

No car, no problem! Getting around Guelph without your own car is easy with the following guide from Hazelview Properties. Our Guelph community at 27 & 40 Vanier Drive is conveniently located in central Guelph near the University, Stone Road Shopping Mall, great restaurants, lively entertainment and more.

Biking
People in Guelph travel for work, school and errands every day, and most of these trips are less than five kilometers from their home base. Did you know that only one percent of those daily trips take place on a bicycle? Bicycle-Friendly Guelph is an initiative that is working to make cycling safer and more convenient in the city. This initiative aims to increase cycling in the city using the five E’s:

  • Engineering new and improved bike lanes and cycling facilities
  • Encouragement through community activities and incentives
  • Enforcement of traffic rules for both drivers and cyclists
  • Education by promoting cycling education programs and in-school programs
  • Evaluation through measuring changes in cycling behavior over time

Cycling is a fantastic way to see the city, reduce energy consumption and to become more healthy and active. For a cycling map of the city, visit the City of Guelph’s website here. Guelph has more than 1,000 hectares of parks and open space with over 70 km of trails and paths perfect for cycling, walking and running.

Public Transit
Taking public transportation where possible is a fantastic option to speed up your commute and to help save the environment. Whether you are using this time to relax, read or catch up with friends, let someone else do the driving. A bus replaces an average of 45 cars, drastically reducing air pollution and easing congestion on roads. The Guelph Transit Commission operates transit bus services in Guelph that comprise over 70 buses serving 28 different transit routes. For information about fares and passes, visit the City of Guelph’s website here.

Students at the University of Guelph can use their valid student cards to travel on Guelph Transit without paying a fee. The Guelph Transit Commission also operates several late night routes and a downtown shuttle aimed at getting University of Guelph students home safely. Passengers can board the late night bus at Guelph Central Station, the University Centre and at the corner of Woolwich (at Wyndham Street). For more information about the late night shuttle click here. The main terminal is located downtown at Guelph Central Station and at the University of Guelph. GO Transit buses and trains and Via Rail also stop at Guelph Central Station. Greyhound and regional bus services are also available and located at the Guelph Bus Terminal at Wyndham and Fountain Street. Guelph Central Station is less than a 15-minute transit ride from Hazelview’s 27 & 40 Vanier Drive community in Guelph.

Car Sharing
Save money, reduce greenhouse gas emission and share the driving with carpool and car sharing programs. Community CarShare is a non-profit co-operative, which provides members with access to vehicles on a self-serve, pay-per-use basis. There is also a Student CarShare program available on 15 campuses across Ontario including the University of Guelph. Another option is to start a carpool at your workplace. Put a map up in your lunchroom and ask people to indicate where they live and when they come to work. Gather those people who live near each other and discuss the possibility of sharing a ride.

Enjoy car-free living in Guelph with these eco-friendly, traffic-easing options that are convenient for Guelph residents.
